A holistic guide to implementing the HASS pathways, designed to support animal welfare professionals in the industry’s call for systemic change.
The HASS Playbook is a complete collection of best practices and how-to guides created for animal welfare organizations to implement programs rooted within the HASS mission and four HASS pathways. Each playbook section is accompanied by a self-assessment tool that helps evaluate current operations and provides customized recommendations that may be used to create or enhance existing programs. The HASS Playbook aims to provide organizations with innovative opportunities to rise above sheltering system challenges and increase capacity for care for their communities.
Utilize the HASS Playbook and self-assessments in one of three ways:
Create a foundation for sustainable programming within your organization.
Community services identified or developed by a shelter to assist pets and people in need.
Shelter services that prioritize reuniting pets with their families.
Programs that enable the community to participate in the process of finding new homes for their pets without having to enter a shelter.
Process of taking in animals in need and identifying or placing them in the best environment available.

The HASS Playbook was built for animal welfare organizations, professionals, and advocates. Whether at the executive leadership level, or operational front-line staff–the HASS Playbook is built for the industry. Already, more than 20 HASS pilot shelters and 170+ partner organizations have committed to or are already implementing community-oriented programming and best practices in alignment with the HASS Playbook.
The HASS Playbook is FREE to use! Access it here.
Much like the origins of the HASS project itself, the HASS Playbook is a data-informed, comprehensive guide developed in collaboration with hundreds of trusted animal welfare professionals. Together, we actively seek to improve upon the effectiveness of the animal welfare system within communities to better support people and pets equally.
The best practices included within the HASS Playbook are rooted in the HASS Core Pathways and aim to put our values into action.
Yes! Each time you access the HASS Playbook, you will be able to keep track of your self-assessment progress by following a few simple steps linked in the description. HASS Playbook self-assessment results and implementation recommendations will also be emailed to you directly upon completion.
The self-assessment, utilized as a gap-analysis exercise, is the first step in understanding how the HASS Playbook can support your organization. Through a series of short quizzes developed in alignment with the HASS Core Pathways, users will receive immediate customized results upon completion of the assessment.
No. The HASS Playbook is a tool to help inform potential gaps within an organization’s support strategy and provides programming recommendations accordingly. All organizations utilizing the HASS Playbook voluntarily implement HASS-rooted programming and/or pathway best practices based on their specific organization’s needs or community desires.
All HASS Playbook self-assessment data completed is protected and private within the HASS project platform. HASS does not collect personal data, no other parties will have access to an organization’s data, nor will HASS ever share self-assessment data with other parties.
